Hotels have in general a guarantee policy of requesting a credit card (cc) if you arrive after 4 pm or 6 pm local time. Be careful, if you do not show up, they will charge your cc at least one night. Always request or read the guarantee and cancellation policies when you are requested to provide a credit card for your booking.

If you do not want to give your cc details, organise yourself to check in at the hotel before 4 pm or 6 PM. In that case they will in general not request a credit card guarantee if you make the booking with a phone call. The best is to always call during day local time of the hotel. This is the time of the day when the reservations department is open. Of course you can always call the hotel anytime but in the evening you may find someone who will simply try to help but may not know all the best booking options.

In case you have booked with arrival time before 4 or 6 PM and you do not arrive by that time, the hotel will release your room to sell it again. When making a hotel booking by phone, always request a confirmation to be sent to you with a confirmation number. That will ensure that the booking is well recorded.

Hotels accept check in from noon with no extra charge. So that means you will plan to arrive between noon and 4 pm or 6 pm.
